Director Identification Numbers: Do I Need One? How Can I apply?

The Commonwealth Government has introduced a Director Identification Numbers scheme. It may also be referred to as a Director ID.

This scheme will require all company Directors to register a 15 digit number with the Australian Business Registry Services (ABRS). The number will be issued to an individual forever, like their tax file number.


Director Identification Numbers are applied for online through myGovID, or alternatively paper applications may be made.

Any errors or inconsistent names with ID documents should be addressed before applying for a Director ID. Directors must apply for their Director ID themselves.


Existing directors appointed before 31 October 2021 have until 30 November 2022 to identify themselves and apply. New Directors appointed between 1 November 2021 and 4 April 2022 have up to 28 days after their appointment to verify themselves and apply for a Director ID. New Directors appointed after 5 April 2022 need to verify themselves and apply for a Director ID before they are appointed as a Director.


Various civil and criminal penalties apply for Directors who are non-compliance with the Director Identification Number scheme.
